What Real People Actually Recommend to Other Real People: Everlane

This next recommendation is a serious one. And it’s not just for people for wear clothes, but also for people who care about other people, who make purchasing decisions with their whole consciousness, and who are truly citizens of the world. It’s a recommendation for people who put people first.

And if those ideas aren’t motivating enough for you to check it out, then listen to this episode of Adam Ruins Everything and see if you reconsider. After listening, we promise that the next time you go clothes shopping, you will be thinking about people other than just the face staring back at you in the fitting room mirror. And today’s recommendation allows you to do something about that.

From our very own, Emmeline Hoang:

I shamelessly care a lot about fashion. Give me a pair of sleek, black pebbled leather booties or dark indigo high-waisted skinny jeans, and I’m yours. This love, though, is a double-edged sword. Stories about the true world of fast fashion—from cost-cutting tactics to unfavorable factory working conditions—make my stomach turn.

Enter Everlane. I first discovered them about 3 years ago, and what first caught my eye were two words scattered throughout their website: radically transparent. I dug deeper and discovered that on every item you clicked, whether it was a cotton t-shirt or pair of suede boots, an infographic would pop up showing you the true cost of the materials, labor, etc., and Everlane’s actual markup. There’s also a specific area of their website called “Factories,” which highlights the men and women who work in Everlane’s factories around the world and how each add to the Everlane story of ethics and quality. It’s a rare experience to hear of a fashion brand practicing mindfulness and transparency—and for that, Everlane deserves all my praises (not to mention for their high-rise skinny jeans and French Terry hoodies, as well—trust me).

(P.S. I name-dropped Everlane during my first job interview at Bovitz—and now here I am, sitting at my desk, wearing my Babos, and recommending them to other real people.)
