How AI Learns

Two technical concepts that many people outside of academia do not yet know are supervised learning and reinforcement learning. We will explore both in more depth in an upcoming post.

  • Supervised learning trains models to recognize patterns in existing data. It helps summarize large volumes of information, identify trends, and accelerate early exploration.
  • Reinforcement learning works differently. Systems learn through interaction and feedback, improving through experimentation and trial and error. In many ways, this process is closer to how humans discover new approaches and solve unfamiliar problems.

Predicting the Present

The distinction matters because today’s AI research tools largely rely on supervised learning which excels at predicting the present.

Humans remain essential for imagining the future.
